Coffee Shop Custom Lighting: Woods Coffee sources custom light fixtures for expansion
The Woods Coffee chain started as a single location in Lynden Washington. When they were ready to expand, owner Wes Herman was looking for rustic-north woods themed lighting that would compliment their north woods decor. In the past Herman had trouble finding a manufacturer willing to meet his requests.
To begin, they came to us with a homemade wall sconce that they needed to have designed up and brought up to a commercial grade, quality fixture that would meet current building code standards. We were able to take their piece, redesign it up to current UL specifications and produce a high quality custom light fixture that works very well with the rest of their rustic crafted furnishings and fixtures. Working from a non traditional fixture or custom image is not a problem for our staff. We meet many requests that begin as a photo of an object or as a drawing that we then design up to a production grade custom light fixture. In this case we worked with the customer to ensure that the overall image was preserved while meeting their needs for a light source as well as code compliance and finish durability.

In planning for the expansion into the owner also wanted a real statement piece for his newest locations. He liked the look of our Impression Bath Pine (A31442) fixture, but was thinking a lot bigger (at least 6 feet bigger!). First we matched our image set to their signature tree image that they use in their logo. We know branding is very important to our commercial clients and we take several steps along the way to make sure your image or logo is preserved the way you want it to be. We then increased the size of the fixture from 36” to 9’ wide x 36” tall to produce what is our largest sconce to date. The up scaling of metal art light fixtures in our line is a common request; our in house design team is able to meet virtually any request for a change in size on any of our hand crafted light fixtures. On this particular piece they were at an early phase of construction on their location, which allowed us to work closely with the builder and electrical contractor to ensure proper mounting support and electrical load capacity were reached. We were also able to help select the appropriate location in their space for the fixture. When working on your custom, it is our pleasure to communicate directly with your service staff to insure proper installation of your custom light fixture. The piece was finished in our Black Iron Powder Coat (97), for a durable finish that will withstand years of use and cleaning in their foodservice environment.
We are proud to say that we have gone on to furnish Woods Coffee with over 50 handmade rustic light fixtures for their 9 locations. It is our goal to form a lasting relationship with all of our customers and meet any of your current or future rustic specialty lighting needs.
Custom Rustic Logo Light for Romano’s Macaroni Grill
Recently, we had a unique request from a Designer for a custom rustic lighting fixture for the Romano’s Macaroni Grill restaurant chain. The chain was ready to update several locations across the US and wanted to turn their old menu boards into branded light fixtures with a rustic look. She knew that we manufacture all of our fixtures in-house and that this type of specialty lighting request was well within our range of capabilities.
The Designer came to us with a concept drawing of a formed steel fixture that would be retrofitted to the existing menu boards to create a large format sconce bearing the Romano’s Macaroni Grill signature M. This may seem like a job most typically sourced from a sign shop, but the Designer knew that we were capable of meeting their request and that there was no need for them to send the business elsewhere. Building custom light fixtures from a designer, architect’s or customer’s drawing is one of the specialties of Avalanche Ranch. We will work directly with the designer to maintain their vision as we turn their design into a custom light fixture.
As with any custom built from scratch, the design evolved as we encountered different challenges. The first challenge on this fixture was creating a mounting system that would allow a universal installation at all of the unique locations. We were able to design and custom fabricate a bracket for easy mounting to the existing light boards. We then set about finding a diffuser that would withstand the elements, as the customer needed these fixtures for exterior application. An acrylic shade material was chosen, which we custom cut and formed for each fixture. We maintain relationships with several shade sources, so there is no need to limit a design for lack of choices. The steel fixture was fabricated and finished in our resilient Dark Chocolate (22) powder coat. As the remodels were under a tight schedule, small quantities of the fixtures were quick-shipped to locations throughout the country, with the remainder delivered to a distribution center. Avalanche Ranch has a network of shipping companies that we use to meet our customers delivery requests. Drop shipping or mixed delivery orders are not a problem and are executed with the highest level of convenience and efficiency to the customer.
This custom light fixture was a unique solution to a problem, with the result being an effective branding tool that will be long lasting and eye catching. Although we pride ourselves on having the most extensive line of Rustic Lodge Lighting made in the USA, we welcome all requests for any type of specialty lighting, rustic or not. Meeting this custom request allowed the Designer to offer their client an additional product besides the standard lighting package. For us that is what it is all about; going out of our way to say “yes” to our customers as often as possible.
